YAB Students Support Youth Experiencing Homelessness

During the 2022-2023 school year, the Youth Advisory Board worked on service projects that addressed issues such environmental sustainability, veteran support, homelessness, hunger, and mental health. After choosing youth experiencing homelessness as the key issue on which to focus youth efforts, the Board created a project to supply needed items to students experiencing homelessness throughout their schools.

Background: The plight of youth experiencing homelessness in PA, particularly in Berks County, is a distressing manifestation of systemic challenges that demand immediate attention and concerted efforts. These young individuals grapple with not only the harsh realities of living without stable housing but also face compounding obstacles in accessing education, healthcare, and social services. The root causes of youth homelessness are deeply embedded in economic disparities, family breakdowns, and a shortage of affordable housing options. In Berks County, the issue is exacerbated by a unique socio-economic landscape. Tackling this crisis requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted needs of these vulnerable youths.

YAB students met with leaders from the Coalition to End Homelessness, Reading Street Medicine, Mary's Shelter, and Hope Rescue Mission to learn more about the issue before creating their project. After learning about the challenges these youth face and the items they most need, YAB students approached area businesses to solicit donations for their backpack drive. YAB students collected and assembled 120+ backpacks containing personal items and necessities (e.g., deodorant, first aid kits, toothbrushes etc.) and donated them to area school counselors and social workers to give to students in need. The project provided access to things youth might not otherwise have or be able to purchase, and it also included a student-created resource card giving information on local shelters, locations where youth can take a shower, get food, or get other help.

The project was created in collaboration with Mia Perez and her YVC Project: Leadership work for Reading High students.

“The fact that this project is positively influencing the community is what makes it meaningful to me…we can make a difference by giving [students] these backpacks so they can meet their basic needs and perhaps develop the courage to look for shelters… I have learned time management, leadership, problem solving, teamwork, and compassion… Most importantly, it has taught me how to empathize with others and take charge in my community to make a change.”  --Mia Perez
